Using XP Hyperterminal with Serializer ver. 1.1

Hi, I am having trouble communicating with my Serializer  Ver. 1.1.

I am using XP Pro on a Dell laptop.   When I connect the COM 1 port ((9-pin) to the Serializer board using a 9 to 25 pin cable (I have to use a 25-pin to 9-pin converter to complete the connection) I can get into Hyperterminal and set it up for communication with the Serializer board.  From that point on I get a constant stream of "ACKSERIAL" from the board.  I can reset the board and for a moment it appears to send the initial welcome screen response, but it is truncated by the "ACKSERIAL" data flow again.  Should I be looking at the cable for a RX TX pin swap?  Should I be using a null-modem cable?  I am sure the board is working since it will stop transmitting as long as the reset button is depressed.

You definitely need to use a null-modem cable.  That might explain your problem.

Re: Using XP Hyperterminal with Serializer ver. 1.1

I have purchased a straight-through 9-pin to 9-pin serial cable and when I connected this cable to my serializer board I still got that constant stream of "ACK" data back in hyperterminal.  I then placed a null-modem adapter between the board and the cable (that is also 9-pin to 9-pin) and now nothing happens.  I cannot get a "fw" command to make the board respond or see the welcome screen data when I press the reset button.  Can someone tell me if I am missing something here?

Re: Using XP Hyperterminal with Serializer ver. 1.1

Have you ensured that Hyperterm is set up correctly, per the instructions in the Serializer User Guide (on the Serializer web page)?  If that isn't set up correctly, then it could explain your problems.

Also, make sure the jumper is installed for RS-232 operation (the one w/ the label 'Remove for TTL Serial' beside it).

Could you please verify whether your sending a command, then getting the 'ACK' back, or if you are simply getting a steady stream of ACKs w/o sending commands?

You could have a bad firmware load.  If this is the case, you can send it back, and we'll fix it for you.   We do test all Serializers before they go out, so I would be very suprised if the Serializer is bad.  Also, I guess it could be a bad RS-232 daughter board (if you have a Serializer WL), but we test those too. :)

Re: Using XP Hyperterminal with Serializer ver. 1.1
Thanks for the reply.  I feel stupid now since I discovered the power supply I had connected to the serializer board was 6 volts, but only capable of supplying 200 mA of current.  This was at the heart of all the problems with the board not performing correctly.  I can now do everything I need to do with a better power supply.
