My computer has the one type and the serializer has the other type of DB-9 connector. Do I need a serial cable extender like this? (straight through type)

You want a serial cable (like the one in the first link) with Male/Female connectors. Also, you would need the RS-232 module that you can get with the Serializer, if you don't already have it.

The connector on the RS-232 module is a female DB-9 connector, and your serial port on your PC should be a male DB-9 connector.
