sorry for the late reply.
The BeagleBoards at beagleboard.org run linux. so being familiar with
linux and having C programming experience is helpful.
The RevC boards have a otg and ehci usb jack so a powered usb hub
can expand the USB. The Newer XM model has 4 EHCI usb and a special
hardware camera interface . Lots of options. They run a regular gui mode
to a DVI monitor or console mode. Most linux friendly hardware works.
